What is a stone

A stone is formed from rocks after it has been trimmed, dressed, or polished into tiny pieces. Stones are prepared in artificial or can be obtained naturally from natural substances. The stones which are used in construction possess high durability, strong, free from cracks, rugged and should not contain other defects.

The different types of stones used in construction

1. Marble

Marble is prepared from natural stone. The colour, design, and patterns are formed by chemical composition. Marbles suitable for your every room. There are different kinds of marble to choose from the living room to the bathroom. Every type has its uniqueness and style. Marbles are available in different colours and patterns. 2. Granite

This tile's main disadvantage is its low fire resistance, but they are resistant to fluids like acids, lime juice, and vinegar. Granite stone needs regular polishing and is a premium stone.

3. Sandstone

Stand stone is called sedimentary rock, which consists of quartz, feldspar, silica etc. it is available in various colours and used in different construction activities like buildings and roads. The compressive strength is >60MPa. There are different types of sandstone available in the market. The higher the quality of sandstone, the more complex the substance is. 4. Syenite

Syenite is an igneous rock; its composition is similar to granite. It also consists of quarts but less than 5%. In construction, it is used in making Cement, Road aggregate, preparing Magnesium and Dolomite refractories, Paving stone, and decorating offices and gardens.

5. Basalt

Basalt is also an igneous rock formed from magma. It consists of high amounts of calcium and magnesium oxides and low amounts of silicates. Basalt is usually available in black colour, rarely in red and orange. Its high strength and non-corrosive nature make it more suitable for construction and marine applications. In construction, it is used to prepare road bases, filter stones, dams, and airfield pavements. It provides more strength than limestone in the concrete mix.

6. Limestone

Limestone is also known as calcium carbonate. It is a non-crystalline, complex sedimentary rock consisting of lime carbonates. Limestone has a compressive strength of 550Kg/ cm2. It is used in preparing floors, cladding, side walls, ceilings, bathroom wall tiles, facades and decorative substances. In India, limestone is usually found in Punjab, H.P, Bihar, Rajasthan and M.P. Limestone is very susceptible to industrial gases, so it is not used as a facing stone.

7. Quartzite

Quartzite is a metamorphic rock which contains a high quantity of quartz. It is widely used in constructions like roofing, flooring tiles, cover walls, and countertops in kitchens. It is more resistant to stains than granite. Quartzite is a hard rock which possesses high strength and is used as a decorative material.

8. Slate

It is a black metamorphic rock which formed from sedimentary rock. It has a high compressive strength of 770 kg/cm2. Slate can be easily split into sheets and used as roofing, damp proof course, and sills work. Slate is a versatile rock and can be used in slabs and pavements. Slate can be found in Rajasthan, U.P, Mysore and M.P.

9. Alabaster

Alabaster is a rock which is mainly used for carving. Alabaster is mainly used in a mixture of gypsum and calcite. These both exhibit similar properties and light colour translucent soft stones. It is susceptible to water. There are different types of alabasters like calcite alabaster, Oriental alabaster. In the mediaeval period, alabaster was used to prepare small windows as it is soft in nature.

10. Travertine

Travertine is a type of limestone and sedimentary rock which is formed by calcium carbonate in rivers or lakes. It is a fibrous, white, cream or tan-coloured stone. It can be polished quickly and used in ornamental substances. It is also used in garden paths, pavings and marble also. However, it is not a marble but used as a marble. In modern constructions, it is used for floorings, ceilings, facades, wall claddings, and lobby walls.
